Solar FAQs

How do I know if solar will work for my business?

Solar power’s suitability depends on the amount of sunlight your property gets every day and the amount of open space available for solar panels. We can answer those questions with a quick satellite photo check of your property. If both conditions are favorable, we will schedule a site survey to determine if a solar system will meet your energy needs and work with your facility’s architecture.

How much will my electric bill drop?

That depends on the size of your solar system and your electricity usage. Substantially lower bills are the norm, however. In addition, during periods when your system generates more electricity than your facility can use, any excess power will flow back to the utility. Your power meter will actually spin backwards, which will result in additional savings for your business.

Is solar technology still changing? Should I wait for future technologies?

Like all technologies, solar will continue to evolve. However, the benefits of solar power will not change as long as people rely on electricity for power. Today’s technologies are proven, reliable and cost effective, and today’s systems are designed to last many years.
Right now there’s also a big cost consideration: federal and state governments and some utilities are currently offering tax incentives and general rebates specifically designed to encourage and reward early adopters to solar power. It’s highly likely that funds allotted to these programs will not be replenished once solar becomes more widely used.

Bottom line: there will never be a better time to invest in solar power.

What size solar system do I need?

Every business is different, so the size of your system will depend on your energy needs, your available space and your solar goals. Commercial systems typically range from 50–500 kW for a medium-sized business. Empire will help you determine your energy needs and design a system that matches your energy savings goals.

What finance options are available?

If you choose to purchase your system, we can help arrange financing through the manufacturer or one of our own resources.

What maintenance is required?

Your solar energy system has no moving parts, so it requires very little maintenance. Overhanging trees close to the panels should be trimmed back regularly, and occasional cleaning and inspection are also recommended. Performance problems are highly unlikely, but should they occur, Empire’s service experts will correct them quickly. Note that typical solar warranties last 20-25 years, which means additional peace of mind.

Is solar power really reliable?

Today’s solar systems are extremely reliable. Several of the largest facilities in the world — including some owned by FedEx, WalMart, eBay and the US Air Force — now use solar power. Even the space station uses solar panels for energy.

Do I need a battery back-up system?

We don’t recommend them. Battery systems are costly, so if you have concerns about running out of power, your solar system can be connected to the power grid or other sources of electrical power, such as generators.

Does a solar system generate any power at night or on cloudy days?

Solar systems run on sunlight, so they will produce slightly less energy on a cloudy day and none during the night. However, most solar systems are connected to a utility grid, and automatically draw power from the grid as needed. There is no power interruption, and customers are not even aware when their system switches over.

How long does a solar system usually last?

Most solar panels carry 25-year manufacturer's warranties. Other parts, including inverters, have 10-year warranties. Many of the first solar systems put into use 30+ years ago are still performing well, so it’s reasonable to assume that most of today’s models will far outlast their warranties.

Will Empire monitor my solar system?

At your request, we can provide system monitoring that allows you a real-time view of your system’s energy output. There are several options to choose from.

Is the process of switching to solar difficult?

Not at all! Empire’s solar teams will get your new system installed and have it operating quickly and efficiently. All you have to do is prepare for lower electric bills and enjoy the knowledge that you’re using clean, sustainable energy.

How long does installation usually take?

That depends on the size of your solar system and complexity of the installation. Variables like the number of panels required and the specific design of your facility will be factored into the installation proposal we present to you. Empire manages the entire process from start to finish and will provide an estimated project timeline at the beginning of the project.

Will Empire handle building permits for the system?

Absolutely. Part of our service is taking care of all building permits. We’ll also see that electrical, building and utility inspections are done and assure that your system meets all local codes.

What if my roof needs repairs after the system is in place?

Commercial systems are not necessarily installed on roofs. However, if your system will be, it’s obviously best if the roof is in good condition. Empire will manage the process of a roof inspection and repairs if needed. Once solar panels are installed, they will actually protect your roof from the elements and provide some level of additional insulation. Empire, through its solar partners, offers a non-penetrating roof mount system and one of the lightest solar systems in the industry.

Is a solar system a sound investment for my company?

Empire’s typical customers can expect to recoup their entire investment within 7-10 years. Depending on which rebate and incentive programs are in place at the time of purchase, it could be sooner. In addition, it’s important to note that a solar system will allow your business to escape the costs associated with rising utility rates and potential issues with Cap & Trade legislation.

Just how good are the rebates and incentives being offered right now?

In certain areas, tax credits and incentives together may cover more than half of the total cost. These incentive and reward programs will only remain in place until solar adoption rates reach a certain level, which makes converting now a smart move. Through 2016, the federal government is offering a 30% (uncapped) tax credit on solar system installations. The Arizona state tax credit is 10% with a $25,000 cap. To check the current incentives offered by the utitlity companies, please check their websites at the following links. You can also contact Empire’s solar team to learn more.

What kind of warranty will I need?

The typical manufacturer’s warranty on solar components is 20-25 years, and we fully support those warranties. In addition, should you ever have issues with your system outside the warranty period, you can call us. We will either address the issue ourselves or arrange for the manufacturer’s assistance.
